An active shooter was reported on or near the campus of Brown University in Rhode Island on Saturday. Providence police stated that multiple individuals were shot in the area.
A text alert sent to students instructed: “Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice.”
The alert also read: “Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself.”
University officials initially reported that a suspect was in custody but later revised their statement to indicate police were still searching for suspects.
Providence Councilmember John Goncalves, whose ward includes the Brown campus, said: “We’re still getting information about what’s going on, but we’re just telling people to lock their doors and to stay vigilant. As a Brown alum, someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, I’m heartbroken. My heart goes out to all the family members and the folks who’ve been impacted.”
The shooting occurred near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the university’s School of Engineering and physics department. According to the university’s website, the building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices.
Engineering design exams were underway when the incident took place.
President Donald Trump stated he had been briefed on the shooting: “I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
FBI Director Kash Patel added: “FBI personnel are on the scene and assisting this evening after the shooting at Brown University and we will provide all capabilities necessary. Please pray for all those involved. We will update with more information as we are able.”
Reports indicated that social media users claimed the shooter remained at large and urged residents to remain alert.
Later, Trump clarified: “The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — The suspect is NOT in custody.”
As of 5:11 p.m. local time, no suspects were in custody according to a Brown University alert.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are present at the scene, university officials reported.
Providence Police Department stated: “This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.”
Brown University, the Providence Police Department and Rhode Island State Police did not immediately respond to inquiries from news organizations.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee said he was actively monitoring the situation: “Our teams at state police and emergency medical services are working closely with local law enforcement. Please stay clear of the area and monitor official channels for updates. Praying for our community.”
