Brett James, a Grammy Award-winning country music songwriter, died in a plane crash in North Carolina on Thursday. The 57-year-old, known for penning hits like “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “When the Sun Goes Down,” was one of three fatalities in the single-engine aircraft accident.

The National Songwriters Hall of Fame confirmed James’ death, stating he was killed in the crash. Authorities have not released detailed information about the incident as investigations continue.

James’ career spanned decades, with his work shaping some of country music’s most enduring songs. His compositions, including Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel” and Kenny Chesney’s “When the Sun Goes Down,” earned critical acclaim and widespread popularity. The song “Jesus Take the Wheel” won Best Country Song at the 49th Grammy Awards in 2007 and was nominated for Song of the Year.

A total of 27 of James’ songs reached number one on country radio. Dierks Bentley, who collaborated with him on the 2013 hit “I Hold On,” paid tribute, calling him “a total legend” and praising his talent as a songwriter and aviator. Bentley noted James’ role in refining the concept for “I Hold On,” which was written after the singer’s father passed away.

James, inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, was remembered by peers for his ability to craft emotionally resonant music. His work left a lasting impact on country music and its artists.
