A Mexican Navy aircraft carrying medical patients crashed Monday near Galveston, Texas, resulting in at least two confirmed deaths.
According to reports, eight people were on board the aircraft — four naval crew members and four civilians, including a 1-year-old medical patient.
Search and rescue operations began immediately following the crash with coordination between the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities. As of Monday afternoon, six individuals have been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard: four are alive, while two deaths have been confirmed. Two additional people remain believed to be trapped inside the wreckage.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office reported that its personnel responded to the incident near the base of the causeway. The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the crash investigation, with support from the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and Galveston Police Department.
Weather conditions in the area have been foggy over the past few days, with visibility dropping to half a mile at about 2:30 p.m. Monday. These conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday morning.
