President Trump recently issued a sharp warning to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, telling him to “watch his as!” and demanding that he immediately shut down Colombia’s cocaine factories “fast” because the U.S. “knows where they are.” The remarks came in response to Petro’s criticism of the United States for taking sanctioned oil tankers from Venezuela and labeling Southwestern America as stolen land. During Monday’s press conference at Mar-a-lago, Trump made the comment after Petro accused the government of demanding that Venezuela return assets it had seized from American oil companies.
Petro previously stated: “Texas is a territory that was invaded. It wasn’t sold. So was California and all of the southern United States.” Tensions between the two leaders have been escalating, with Petro being Colombia’s first left-leaning president in recent history. The dispute occurs amid heightened tensions between the United States and Venezuela as oil tankers continue to be seized in the Caribbean.
In October, Trump imposed sanctions on Petro and his family members. During Monday’s press conference, Trump also confirmed plans for land strikes targeting drug trafficking regions, not limited to Venezuela but “anywhere drugs are pouring in.” Trump’s message was clear: Petro, Venezuelan President Maduro, and others involved in the dangerous drug trade must heed his warning.
