According to investigators, a new theory has emerged suggesting that Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan suspect accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington DC, may have been blackmailed into carrying out the attack.

Sources familiar with the investigation exclusively told The Daily Beast that U.S. intelligence is examining whether the suspect was threatened by the Taliban. It’s suggested they targeted his family if he didn’t proceed with what would appear to be a terrorist act near the White House.

Lakanwal, 29, who had previously worked as a partner force member for the CIA in Afghanistan, faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly opening fire on two West Virginia National Guard troops just blocks from Washington’s center on November 26. One individual was killed and another critically injured.

The intelligence source, involved in helping Afghans targeted by Taliban factions, stated that Lakanwal could have been coerced through extreme pressure, with the possibility of his loved ones being severely harmed if he didn’t comply.

This alleged blackmail theory underscores the severe stress faced by individuals who fled Afghanistan post-withdrawal and sought refuge or new lives elsewhere.
