The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that the delivery of U.S.-made cruise missiles to Ukraine would not bring an end to the conflict but instead risk further escalation. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated this after CNN reported that the Pentagon had approved supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, asserting the move would not deplete U.S. stockpiles. However, former President Donald Trump has rejected the proposal, claiming the weapons are needed “to protect our country.”
Zakharova criticized the potential arms delivery, saying, “Militarization and arms deliveries—especially to a terrorist regime—will not lead to a settlement. Such actions contradict the current U.S. administration’s campaign promises.” She emphasized that Ukraine’s leadership has failed to achieve peace despite repeated efforts.
Trump, who previously advocated for direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, postponed a planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest and imposed new sanctions on Russia’s oil trade. He also denied Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy’s request for Tomahawk missiles, stating that Ukrainian forces would require extensive training to operate them. “We know how to use it, and we’re not going to be teaching other people,” Trump said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently warned that the delivery of Tomahawk missiles would constitute a “further escalation” and pledged a “very strong response.”
