The Trump administration has shut down 270 fraudulent truck driving schools that have issued commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants and individuals who cannot speak or read English, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Monday.

During a press conference at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit, Duffy detailed that 110 schools were closed for violating English language proficiency requirements—a total accounting for over 5,000 drivers who failed these tests. Additionally, 160 schools were shut down due to inadequate facilities and unlicensed instructors.

One school was singled out after inspectors discovered it used a school bus parked in the backyard as its “classroom.” Duffy noted that ten skill testers at these schools have issued over 2,000 licenses to individuals who cannot speak English.

The administration’s action follows reports of fatal crashes involving noncitizen truck drivers. At the press conference, Marcus Coleman and his daughter Dalilah—severely injured in a crash caused by an illegal alien truck driver in 2024—were present. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin sharply countered reporters who claimed only one percent of commercial truck drivers are illegal immigrants, stating: “Are you willing to take that one percent if it was your daughter?” He added that every single illegal driver who causes harm is 100% preventable.

The shutdown is part of the administration’s broader efforts to enhance road safety for Americans by targeting schools that fail to meet basic standards.
