Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted, with a trial set to proceed under the oversight of a judge appointed by President Joe Biden. The case has drawn national attention amid questions about accountability and judicial impartiality.
U.S. District Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff, a 2021 appointee of Biden, was randomly assigned to oversee the proceedings. Nachmanoff, who serves in Alexandria, Virginia, previously presided over cases involving Trump associates and rulings that aligned with the former administration’s policies. Notably, he permitted the firing of a military doctor criticized by Trump allies for advocating COVID-19 vaccines.
Comey is expected to surrender on October 9 and will be represented by attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald, who denied the charges in a statement. The case will be decided by a jury, not the judge, with an arraignment scheduled for the same day in Virginia.
