John Mara, the chief executive officer and co-owner of the New York Giants, disclosed he is undergoing treatment for cancer. “I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara said in a statement. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time,” he added.

Mara was present at MetLife Stadium on Sunday as the Giants defeated the Chargers 21-18 in their first win of the season after three losses. Unlike many NFL owners, Mara is a regular presence in the team facility, with an office in the building. He frequently observes practice and maintains daily communication with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

The type of cancer Mara has and the stage or severity of his diagnosis were not disclosed. Reports indicate he has experienced weight loss. The Giants are a family-run organization, with Mara being the son of the late Wellington Mara, a franchise patriarch. John Mara’s grandfather, Tim, purchased the franchise for $500 in 1925.

Former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin expressed support, stating, “Sending strength, support, and prayers to John Mara. Your leadership and grit inspire everyone around you. No one fights cancer alone. It takes a team and always proud to be on yours.”

Mara has managed the day-to-day operations of the organization for years, alongside Steve Tisch, since the deaths of their fathers, Wellington Mara and Bob Tisch, in 2005. The Mara and Tisch families hold equal ownership of the franchise. Recently, they agreed to sell 10% of the team to Julia Koch and her family, pending approval. The sale is not expected to alter daily operations, as the families will retain control.

A lawyer by profession, John Mara has been with the Giants for 34 years. The franchise was founded by his grandfather Tim in 1925. Mara serves as chairperson of the NFL’s management council and has been a member of the league’s competition committee for 24 years.
