The government shutdown is officially in effect. Yet, Senate Democrats are preparing a taxpayer-funded trip to a five-star resort in Napa Valley during a critical period. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has organized a “Napa Retreat” on October 13th and 14th, coinciding with the second week of a potential shutdown. The event will take place at Hotel Yountville, described as a luxury vineyard estate with Tuscan-inspired amenities, including private fireplaces, sunken tubs, and fine dining experiences.

Attendees include Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Angela Alsobrooks, and Representative Haley Stevens, among others. The retreat will feature a wine tour and dinner at Staglin Family Vineyards, an organic vineyard. Critics argue that lawmakers, who continue receiving pay during shutdowns, are prioritizing luxury over public service. Senate Leader John Thune highlighted the event’s purpose, stating it aims to “raise money from a lot of rich, sort of left-wing billionaires.” The DSCC has not publicly commented on the plans, which have drawn accusations of misplaced priorities amid national uncertainty.
