Kia America, Inc. has initiated a recall of nearly 40,000 vehicles after identifying a defect in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that could pose a fire hazard. The affected models include 2021-2023 Kia Sorento vehicles, with approximately 39,536 units impacted. The recall notice cited issues with the blower motor wiring harness, which may lead to overheating and potential fire risks.

The recall covers all 2021-2023 Kia Sorento LX models produced between September 10, 2020, and December 29, 2023, at Kia’s Georgia factory. Owners will receive letters by November 24, instructing them to bring their vehicles to a dealership for free repairs. Technicians will replace the blower motor resistor circuit harness and blower motor resistor.

Kia estimated that about 1% of the recalled vehicles, or roughly 395 cars, have the defect. The automaker attributed the issue to thin wiring gauges at a Mexican parts supplier, which could cause the HVAC system to overheat. Drivers are advised to watch for signs such as an inoperable blower motor, burning smells, or smoke from vents.

The 2024 Sorento models are excluded from the recall, as they feature a different HVAC system. No further details on the defect’s extent were provided by Kia.
