A harrowing account of a brutal stabbing has emerged following the death of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was fatally attacked by Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old homeless individual with a history of criminal offenses. The incident, which occurred on August 22 on the Lynx Blue Line in Charlotte, has been amplified by newly released 911 call recordings that capture the desperate cries of witnesses as Zarutska bled out from severe stab wounds.

The audio reveals that Zarutska was already unconscious and losing significant blood when emergency services were contacted. A caller described the scene: “A man just f–king stabbed this woman for no reason,” while another pleaded, “Please hurry, she’s bleeding. She’s bleeding a lot.” Witnesses reported that Zarutska, who had fled Ukraine in 2022 seeking safety from the Russian invasion, was unresponsive as bystanders attempted to apply pressure to her wounds. One caller stated, “I think she’s gone,” while another noted, “Some girl got stabbed on the train. I think she’s dead, man.”

Brown, described by some callers as a black man in blue jeans and a red hoodie with dreadlocks, was identified by a witness and later arrested. He faces federal charges including first-degree murder and an act causing death on a mass transportation system, which could carry the death penalty. Brown has not yet entered a plea.

The case highlights the failures of systems meant to protect vulnerable individuals, as Brown had previously been released despite his criminal history. The incident has sparked outrage over the lack of accountability and support for both victims and perpetrators within the justice system.
