A male school bus driver in North Carolina has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of child sex abuse after allegedly targeting teenage boys. Leetwain Darrell Tate, 48, faces two counts of statutory rape, six counts of indecent liberties with a minor, and one count of statutory sex offense. Authorities allege he lured at least four boys aged 14 to 15 to his residence, where he engaged in sexual acts, including offering money for sex.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit. Tate was suspended from his job as a school bus driver at Sugar Creek Charter School during the probe and subsequently fired before being taken into custody. Police confirmed the incidents did not occur on school property or while he was operating a bus.

Tate, who reportedly identified as “Ms. Sharon” to students, was arrested without incident by the department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. His family, present at the courthouse, stated they believe him innocent. A preliminary investigation indicates multiple victims, with some staying at Tate’s residence. The case highlights concerns about oversight in hiring practices and the protection of minors.

Lt. Corey Geohagen praised the Crimes Against Children Unit for its work and acknowledged the bravery of the juvenile victims who came forward. He emphasized that crimes against children often go unreported due to fear or coercion, leaving potential additional victims unidentified.

Tate remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
