A new study highlights an unexpected factor in living a longer, healthier life: flexibility. Published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, the research suggests that physical pliability—measured by something as simple as touching one’s toes—could be as critical to longevity as traditional exercise routines.

Over nearly three decades, scientists tracked 3,139 middle-aged adults (aged 46–65) from the CLINIMEX exercise cohort in Rio de Janeiro. Participants’ flexibility was assessed using a “Flexindex,” calculated from the passive range of motion across 20 joint movements, scoring 0–4 per movement for a total of 0–80. The findings revealed that individuals with higher flexibility scores lived longer than those with lower scores.

After adjusting for age, BMI, and health status, men with low flexibility faced nearly double the risk of death compared to their more flexible peers. For women, the disparity was even greater: those with the lowest Flexindex had almost five times the mortality risk. While women generally scored 35% higher in flexibility tests than men, lower flexibility still correlated with poorer survival outcomes.

Though the study is observational and cannot confirm causation, the link between flexibility and longevity persisted even after accounting for other health factors. Researchers note that a supple body—capable of moving freely—may better withstand aging’s physical stresses.

Incorporating regular stretching into daily routines could enhance mobility and resilience, regardless of one’s current fitness level. Experts emphasize that consistency and proper technique, rather than extreme flexibility, are key to reaping benefits.

The findings challenge conventional notions of longevity, positioning flexibility as a vital yet often overlooked component of health.
