A man killed by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England has been identified as William Chapman, a former child actor.

On Saturday afternoon, Chapman entered the enclosure where Altai, a 420-pound rare Siberian tiger, attacked him and fatally mauled him.

Moments before the incident, Chapman filmed himself inside the enclosure and posted the short video to his social media. Witnesses described Chapman as appearing very happy prior to the attack, with some noting he seemed detached from reality as the tiger displayed aggression.

Before the fatal encounter, zoo-goers reported seeing Chapman dancing happily and asking a stranger to take a photo of him with Altai in the background, repeatedly saying, “One more, one more, one more!” In the video footage provided to investigators, Chapman was heard saying, “Thank you, lady.”

Onlookers stated Chapman appeared “not attached to reality” as the tiger began attacking him, at which point he ordered the animal to “stop being naughty.” Park workers fired two warning shots with a shotgun to scare off Altai, who retreated to his pen. Officials rushed to try and save Chapman but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chapman, in his mid-20s, traveled to the park alone from the nearby town of Doncaster, where he lived. Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed Altai was “safe and well” following the incident and stated the tiger would not be euthanized.

William Chapman appeared on British television programs as a child actor. He attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe and had roles in ITV’s May Contain Nuts alongside Shirley Henderson, best known for playing Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter films, and in the BBC series True Stories, where he portrayed Edward Jenner.

The City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation into the death, which it said is “in line with our statutory duties.”

The exact reason Chapman entered the enclosure remains unknown at this time.
