The mother of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of fatally shooting Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, has disclosed details about her son’s ideological transformation in the year preceding the attack. According to court documents, Robinson’s mother told investigators that her son had undergone a “dramatic” shift, becoming increasingly politically engaged and adopting progressive stances on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights.
She described how Robinson, once a college scholarship recipient with a promising future, began advocating for pro-trans and pro-gay causes, diverging sharply from the views of his father, a known Trump supporter. The mother recounted frequent arguments between her son and his father over their opposing political ideologies, with Robinson reportedly dismissing Kirk’s event at UVU as “stupid” and accusing the activist of spreading “too much hate.”
Robinson’s mother also revealed that she was the first to recognize him in FBI-issued photos of the suspect. On September 11, she contacted her son after seeing the images and alleged he claimed to be home sick. She then informed his father of her suspicions, prompting further investigation.
Investigators disclosed that Robinson had told his roommate, who is not charged in connection with the shooting, that he had “had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred” and planned the attack for “a bit over a week.” The mother’s statements paint a picture of a son increasingly radicalized and estranged from his family’s political beliefs in the months leading to the crime.
