In a candid moment captured in this video, John MacArthur addresses his views on Mormonism after an audience member posed a question about engaging with members of that faith who express agreement with core Christian tenets like belief in Jesus and the cross.
MacArthur clarifies his stance: “You may get to [calling them demon worshipers] of necessity… It’s not that they are demon worshippers, but here’s the problem. They are polytheists.”
He elaborates on this point, stating that Mormons believe every person born into their fold becomes a new god, directly contradicting biblical monotheism.
Further probing reveals another critical issue: “They have a Christ who is another Jesus… And another Jesus is a way to preach another Jesus and you get cursed.” MacArthur explains that Mormon teachings about having multiple gods means they fundamentally misunderstand God as described in Christianity.
The third heaven offered by Mormons, where grace operates according to their theology, leads to eternal singleness. This concept of “grace” becomes a near-universalism aimed at saving souls but requires immense religious works for entry into the better heavens, which promise more severe deprivations.
MacArthur concludes: “Wrong God, wrong Christ, wrong way of salvation.” He adds that Mormons also claim the Bible is corrupt, further differentiating their beliefs from traditional Christianity.
