The gunman who opened fire at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, MI, this morning has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford. A U.S. Marine veteran who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008, Sanford lived approximately 15 minutes away from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Burton, MI, before the attack. He was killed during a shootout with law enforcement.

Sanford allegedly planted explosive devices at the church, where hundreds of people were gathered for worship. Authorities found several improvised explosive devices on church property, which a bomb squad is investigating. The attacker rammed his Chevy Silverado truck into the building before opening fire on congregants and their families with a semi-automatic rifle. At least two people were killed, and nine others were injured.

Sanford’s mother confirmed his military service through a Facebook post, though details about his mental health, medications, or potential links to PTSD remain unclear. His motive for the attack is unknown, as is whether he had previously attended the church. A GoFundMe campaign from 2015 mentioned Sanford’s son, who was born with a rare disorder.

Law enforcement sources confirmed Sanford as the suspect in the incident. The source of the fire at the church has not been determined. No further updates have been released regarding the investigation.
